INSide matters is a blog about inner life – the world as we find it inside ourselves. It’s about, getting to know those places that seem hidden, places where we find meaning, space to get to know ourselves.
Psychology tries to do it through counselling and therapy; a shaman might do shadow work; religions teach different forms of meditation and prayer; artists, writers, musicians, philosophers, scientists… have found all sorts of profound, beautiful, and bizarre ways of exploring inner realms…
Sometimes, to appreciate what’s happening in the outside world, we need to understand what is happening on the inside. Our perceptions and perspectives can make a world of difference.
The idea for INSide matters came from three main concepts:
Imagination helps us to see clearly and feel fully. It’s intuitive, mysterious, awe-inspiring. Imagination, as Coleridge put it is the ‘living power and prime agent of all human perception’.
Neurodiversity, alongside, temperament, personality, and other forms of diversity, can provide a positive framework for understanding mental health and wellbeing. The term was coined by Judy Singer, who said, ‘[it] refers to the virtually infinite neuro-cognitive variability within Earth’s human population. It points to the fact that every human has a unique nervous system with a unique combination of abilities and needs.’
Spirituality; in one form or another, a sense of something spiritual or sacred, is usually at the heart of any healing or growing. It might feel ‘taboo’ or too big for words, or just too abstract a concept. But there are practical forms of spirituality. Practices that reoccur, albeit expressed differently, throughout human history, throughout the world’s religions – practices and innate knowledge that are universal. Teachings of kindness and compassion. Love.
